in praise of the new

I think I may be a newness addict. I like new experiences, some only if I have analyzed them a bit. I will taste almost anything (there are limits) and I like discovering new music and books. Movies too, to a certain extent. It is harder to get me to sit down on the couch and watch a movie. Once I am there, though, I usually am hooked.

In that light, I ask you-what music do you tell people they *must* listen to? What books must they read? What movies must they see? What foods must they try? And....why?

I liked Ninth Gate, with Johnny Depp, although it missed a lot of really good parts from the book. It is still a cohesive storyline. Mean Guns, with Ice T and Christopher Lambert, is a trainwreck of a movie I will watch every time it is on. Alice, by animator Jan Svankmajor, is amazingcreepydark.

I have a hard time saying what music I recommend, because I like so many groups, so many singers, so many genres. Best I can do is what has my attention at the moment. Same with books. The Sweet Potato Queens books are a must read for any Southern girl. Heck, for any girl. Well, for anyone, really, who needs a dose of kick-in-the-ass to enjoy life. Goedel, Escher, Bach (see reading list) and the other Douglas Hofstadter books are excellent. So is Illusions, by Richard Bach. Ok, the book list would take up pages and pages, so I will also just keep posting what I am reading on the left side, there.

» Desert Island Albums from Snowblink
This was inspired by Desert Island Discs and Alicia's desire for new music. I think the choices can be quite revealing as to how we change. My choices are not too far from what they would have been 5 years... [Read More]

I'm with you on new things, especially music. I know a lot of people love oldies and classic rock and all that but I have a low tolerance for it. I usually like stuff that nobody's even heard of - like rock music from latin america. Gustavo Cerati is a genius. The latest music I've been listening to is Nelly Furtado's "Folklore" - but it's heavily influenced by Brazillian and Cape Verdean music. At least it's in English! Mostly.

Oh I like the old stuff too. There isn't much music I don't like. But I like finding new-to-me stuff so much it is like a compulsion. (Me? OCD? *cough-cough*)

Sometimes I like the new music off the bat, the new releases that is. Other times it takes me a while to find the beauty. It also depends on my musical mood. I have a hard time listening to trance-house music when I am in the mood for folk. Understandable I think. I bet I would love the latin rock you listed, thanks :)

Yes, though, a lot of things I like few people have heard of. I am always surprised. I like introducing people to Schrodinger's Cat (local), Reverend Horton Heat (also local, but mush more famous) and Poi Dog Pondering (old days only, when they were in Texas). And not just local music, I like more than that. Okay I can tell I am just rambling here... :)

I'd recommend anything that doesn't fit a cliche.
