turn and face the strange...changes

Chris mentioned in the skinny on fat post that "we need to stop looking up to this supermodel, heroin-chic idea of how people should look and start accepting each other (and ourselves) for what we are." That is absolutely right.

Here are a couple of links that show you just what they do to models' photos before they get into the magazines. Here, here, and just so the men don't feel left out, here. Roll over the images with your mouse to see the "before retouching" picture. The full set is on the left side of each page. No one is immune from retouched imaging. We are convinced this is "normal" because we see it everywhere we go. And it doesn't matter that we are told not to compare ourselves to these fake photos, we are shown the fake photos. I don't know for sure, but I bet visual images imprint faster and deeper in most people than verbal images.

n.b. This was originally called "ch-ch-ch-ch-changes (turn and face the strange)", then I moseyed over to Wanderlustress
and read a post I had read yesterday and forgotten, called "ch-ch-ch-ch-changes." I am sure that was in my subconscious when I was writing this. Ironic that the changes are the post name :)

The irrational conspiracy theorist in me thinks that the women's magazines, cosmetic companies, diet companies and fashion companies are all one big conglomerate which is meant to keep women in a constant state of self-evaluation over our bodies and looks. They all need each other to survive- and the only way they can do that is to make you feel imperfect, inadequate.

It's too bad that the average woman doesn't realize that methods such as the one outlined in your blog are being employed to sell beauty and that it's a farce.

You are so right. There was study done that showed women who read
fashion magazines on a regular basis scored worse on self-esteem than
those who gave them up during the same time. It makes me so mad!!!

That's right. And the study you mention, Teresa, did before and after the magazine reading also. Esteem dropped significantly in that short amount of time.

Man ... I had a post called "ch-ch-ch-ch-changes", too! Is that song really that ubiquitous?

Great post, Alicia, those images are hella creepy, as they'd say on South Park. It's almost scary. Why do we need to eliminate all hint of imperfection? What does that say aboutus?
