fish "tacos" and "girl scout" cookies

fish tacos
You are Fish 'Tacos.' You might think you're
exotic and worldly-wise, but in reality you're
just a bunch of crap on toast. Repeat after
me: 'just because you put something in
quotation marks doesn't make it so.' And
'taco' isn't Spanish for 'toast.'

What Weight Watchers recipe card from 1974 are you?

Speaking of food, let me take this opportunity to point out that some of us are paying more for our Girl Scout cookies than others of us. Apparently there is a scale of $2.50-$4.00 and each region, or rather community, gets to decide how much it is going to charge per box of cookies. Now, like good little entrepreneurs, these cute little door-to-door hucksters aren't going to tell you that not everyone is paying $3.50 a box when you buy your cookies this year. If you actually buy from a girl at your door, she may say "uh, I dunno" when you ask why the cost increase. If you buy from her parent at your office, he or she may not know either. The truth is as follows:

"Girl Scout Cookies sell for different prices in different areas of the country. Each of the 300 plus local Girl Scout councils has the right to set its own price based on its needs and knowledge of the local market. Today's prices, currently $2.50 to $4.00 per box, depending on location, reflect both the current cost of cookies and the realities of providing Girl Scout activities in an ever-changing economic environment."

$2.50 AND $4.00 a box do not reflect the current cost of cookies for the National Council of Girl Scouts. They have a set fee, goodness knows how much less than $2.50 a box it really is. I don't know why I am upset by this. Maybe I shouldn't be. Maybe I am being silly. It just reminds me of schools that have richer kids get more taxes going to them so they have better everything than schools that provide education and extra-curricular activities for poorer kids. I don't know what to do about it yet, but it just doesn't seem right.

cookies make everything better!

Today I suffered one of the indignities of being female, my annual exam. This year, joy of joys, I have been scheduled for a mammogram as well. Yay.

When I got home, however, I had a package on my doorstep from Santa Cruz. A box of 100% organic cookies, Clyde's Cookies cookies, from NakedJen. Delicious! I am not sure they will last the evening :)

do your part to fight breast cancer

according to Snopes.com (my source for debunking all hoaxes), it is true that part of the proceeds from each bag of pink and white M&Ms sold goes to fund breast cancer research.

I urge all of you out there to do your part and go eat lots of pink and white M&Ms. Make the sacrifice. Eat chocolate and help your sisters and mothers and daughters have a chance in the fight against breast cancer.

Tell everyone you must eat the chocolate, it's for a good cause. :)

what's cooking?

Reading Light & Darkness's 100 things, I saw that she loves recipes. I do too. As a matter of fact, combine recipes with books (my all time favorite) and you get the best: cookbooks. These grimoires of food preparation, recipes handed down over years and modified with each new cook's preferences...I love it. I have a cookbook that was given to me for my first marriage, a collection of my mother's and her friends' recipes. Whenever someone in the family writes down a new one for me, I stick it in this book. I have two copies of The Joy of Cooking, one from 1973, apparently just a reprint of a 1962 edition, and The New Joy of Cooking from 1997, newly revised and with additional material by Ethan Becker, third generation chef in the Rombaur-Becker family. I use these two books more than the others I have.

Anyway, I don't have a huge collection of cookbooks. I am sure many of you have incredible collections. Here are a couple of pictures of mine. What books are on your kitchen shelves?

cookie, cookie, cookie starts with "C"

And Clyde's Cookies are the best of them.

I got a wonderful package today from NakedJen today, full of organic vegan chocolate chip cookies (with and without oatmeal). Let me tell you how wonderful they are. Wonderful!

I really hope NakedJen gets these into a regular business, as I am now addicted. Did I mention they are vegan organic chocolate chip cookies? They don't taste like the usual cardboard ick you get in the health food stores, either. They are truly Clyde-damned delicious!

Back to my cookies and coffee. Diet? What diet?
