what do you do when you are sick?
Speaking of being sick, I ordered Chinese delivery for lunch and got the hot and sour soup. This does wonders when I have an upper respiratory anything going on. It's like a kicked up chicken soup. I also have been downing lots of OJ for the vitamin C on the recommendation of a close friend. Our family always made homemade potato soup when people got sick.
Had I been nauseaus, I would have had Sprite and saltines, maybe some not-so-hot tea.
What do you do to take care of yourself when you are sick? What kind of soup (or other food) do you eat to feel better?

I just don't get it
Would someone please explain to me why doctor's offices open at 7 or 8, but the pharmacy doesn't open till 9? Is this like the hot dogs and buns conundrum?
It is no fun waiting 30 minutes for a pharmacy to open when you feel like Death drove over you in his mini-van.

on the road again
I'll be out of town Monday through Wednesday on a trip to San Antonio. I may take my laptop, or I may try moblogging, if I can set it up right. If neither occur, I'll be incommunicado for a bit. I'll see if the hotel has internet service and a computer, some do these days. Meanwhile, I'll be walking on the riverwalk and remembering the Alamo. I promise to come back with pictures, and tales of derring-do (or minor adventure at the very least).

preaching the message, if we can figure out what it is...
I got the most curious junk mail in the post today. It is from our First Baptist Church, a mass mailing to whoever has a mailbox. I didn't realize it was from a church at first, because the front is a big oval with the words American Idol in it and stars in various sizes around the oval. Underneath, the caption is "Do you have what it takes?"
Oh good, I thought, they are having auditions for American Idol here in my little hometown.
I turn the flyer over and see the map, and then I see the church information, with service times. The header says The First Baptist Church of Myli'lhometown hosts THE ULTIMATE TALENT SEARCH!
American Idol Episodes are listed underneath. April 18: "so you want to be a star?" April 25: "Making your gift shine" (I start to get suspicious here) May 2: "Are you a square peg in a round hole?" (WTF?) May 9: "Don't let the judges get you down" and May 16: "You better use it or you'll lose it"
I'm slow when it comes to advertising. I stared at this for several minutes wondering why a church, a Baptist church at that, would host American Idol auditions. Then it dawned on me. Ohhhhh, it's a gimmick.
Stupid gimmick if you ask me. Doesn't the bible warn against idolatry?

regarding those wishes...
Leslee makes a good point that you aren't supposed to tell your wishes to people, lest they get jinxed and don't come true.
So I rescind my wish, it's April Fool's Day and I was just kidding. That's it. Really :)
I hope your wishes come true.

curious
There is a children's poem called "I Keep Three Wishes Ready" by Annette Wynne, and it is basically about this child, I figure it's a girl in the poem, who keeps three wishes ready in case she meets a fairy who grants the traditional three wishes.
It got me thinking what a good idea this is in general, to know what you would wish for at any given time. Like having your goals in the forefront of your mind, it would help you do what you need to do to head toward them.
I will tell you my first one right now is selfish, it is for the strength to tell people what I really want, no matter the consequences.
Do you have three wishes? Or even just one? What is it?
(below is the poem in its entirety)
I Keep Three Wishes Ready
by Annette Wynne
I keep three wishes ready,
Lest I should chance to meet,
Any day a fairy
Coming down the street.
I'd hate to have to stammer,
Or have to think them out,
For it's very hard to think things up
When a fairy is about.
And I'd hate to lose my wishes,
For fairies fly away,
and perhaps I'd never have a chance
On any other day.
So I keep three wishes ready,
Lest I should chance to meet,
Any day a fairy
Coming down the street.

errata
Dress pictures will have to wait till I have them re-made. My mother isn't the best photographer and the images are cropped funny. I'll make more this week. I don't mind trying on the dresses again :)
Meanwhile, I am furiously job hunting and it occurred to me (again, I'm slow) that now is the time to do what I want, decide what I really want to be doing with myself. I found out that ITT Tech has a game programmer's degree, but not at any of their Texas campuses. I do like the idea, however, of going back for more training in web design and programming. They have an online course I could take while working somewhere fun. Or I can buckle down and go in to classes at the Dallas campus.
Option #2 I am considering is going for a massage therapy license. It's something I have wanted to do for years but was too busy working 50 hours a week and driving 10 more on top of that.
I am sure if I look there are other careers I would love to go into. Jill of all trades, master of none, that's me. I guess it's time to grow up and decide. Even though I don't want to...
My next career/job will be something fulfilling and enjoyable. I am asking for that, I hope to get it. We all deserve to enjoy our lives.

the miss has been remiss
I have sorely been neglecting the "thoughts thunk" part of my mission statement, but rest assured I'll be using some of this time off wisely soon.
Meanwhile, here's a creepy little short movie called The Cat With Hands. thanks to Neil Gaiman for the link.

this is genius!
I found an APA style template to download FOR FREE. Doesn't this make putting papers with no style formatting at all into the APA style so much easier for me? Woo hoo!
It's the little things that get us through the day :)

insomnia
I hate insomnia. At least I finally am catching up on reading all your blogs, which I have not had much time to do lately. Isn't it odd that I have less time now that I am not working because I am working more since I got laid off? Hallelujah for that. So far my favorite potential job is working as a tutor at the Writing Center of UNT. The people are great, the head lady is one of my dearest friends, and...I know I am wierd...we sit around talking about sentence structure and alternate word choice. I love it. Yes it's part time, yes it pays crap, yes it feeds my soul. I do feel kind of wierd being so much older than the other tutors. They are, after all, working their way through college. I am not taking any poor college student's job, either, because right now the center is very short handed and looking for all kinds of help.
I have been told this isn't a "real job," complete with eye rolling, but I ignore that person :) Meanwhile, since it is part time I have time to work on other things like writing and art. I have more pictures to post now that my scanner is working again. I'll probably get to that tomorrow. Or, rather, later today.
Ever notice when you are really tired that everything is funny? Yep, that's about where I am. I better go try to get some sleep.
